My students do not come ready and excited to read on a daily basis. They come from an area where it is much more beneficial for them to perform actions rather than thoughts. They do not have much motivation, but I want to increase that in my classroom. They just need a bit more of a push than some students in order to understand the joy and importance of reading and learning. Graphic novels will help with that understanding as well as the goals that I want the students to achieve.
Graphic novels are all the rage right now. I am excited that a novel that I have to teach anyway is available in graphic form as well. My students will be reading The Giver, and I would like them to read the graphic novel version of it as well. Reading the graphic novel will help them better understand the text. It is also more interesting for the students and they will better "get" it. They will be able to see Jonas actually seeing red. They will be able to see the releasing ceremonies. The students will enjoy the book more after reading the graphic version.
