My Students

My students are hard-working, small-town, rural kids. They are engaged and competent. They are involved in many extracurricular activities. They are learning to have discussions with each other and work together as collaborative learners. These students are also working intently on developing a love of reading. They come to school with willing attitudes, but they sometimes struggle to see how a novel or how history applies to them in their situations. We are working on understanding the relevance of really important historical events and practices such as the Holocaust and slavery in the United States.

My Project

My students need copies of "The Giver" to promote literacy and increase their understanding of the relevance of history in their lives.

It's so important that we continue to remember the things we have learned from events such as the Holocaust and The Civil War.

It's difficult for my students to understand the relevance of these historical events in their lives. By starting the school year by reading The Giver, my students will begin to grasp the importance of Memory. They will understand that Memory gives a community a purpose, an identity, a mission, and a deeper sense of humanity.
