My Students

Kahakai Elementary in Kailua-Kona Hawai'i is a school rich in cultural backgrounds and diversity. Our school is a Title 1 school and many of our families struggle to make ends meet, especially during this pandemic. Our students are special because we are a "mixed plate" of ethnicities! We truly know what it means to be inclusive and respect all cultures.

This pandemic has taken its toll on many families who work multiple jobs and are doing the very best that they can for their children.

I have seen many children come to school hungry, thus being unable to focus. Last quarter, I used my own money to purchase healthy snacks for my students. Everyday, students were able to choose one snack. This simple gift for some was the highlight of their day. I have learned that before learning and focus can happen, children need to eat and find simple little joys like choosing their own snack.

Just as important as snacks are BOOKS! Our students LOVE to have books in their hands. I believe that kids need to build the love of reading early on so they can set themselves up for success in the future.

My Project

Healthy snacks will motivate my students to come to school daily. Having a full tummy will help them to focus on their school work. Fresh new books for our library will encourage the love of reading and help our students to make positive book choices.

The books that were chosen were from my current students' interests.

I can't wait to introduce the new books in to our library and see their excitement when they realize these books were chosen just for them. These books will get them excited about reading and build their love for literacy.
