Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember reading a loud in your classroom? Each student waiting to take a turn to voice a character? This experience is not available to many of my students due to their disability. Many of my students are non-verbal and cannot read a loud during our literature circle.
I teach a special day class for middle-school students who are severally impacted by autism.
My students enjoy reading and looking through our classroom library, however many of the students are non-verbal or beginning readers and cannot read a loud from these texts. This limits their comprehension and participation not only in my classroom, but also in their general education classes.
My Project
During literature circles in the classroom, non-verbal students will be able to utilize the pen to give them a voice while reading. While reading with the pen, they will learn how to track words while reading. The pens also provide a way for students to answer comprehension questions, instead of a student gesturing to a picture they can use the pen to voice the answer. The Read Anybook pen will be used with my emerging readers as well. Since the pen reads aloud to the student, they can begin to mimic and repeat the words. The pen also allows the student to listen to a passage as many times as needed to fully understand the text.
Many of my students have been marginalized for years and are often seen as having low abilities especially in the areas of reading and comprehension.
However, with your donation I will be able to give my students a voice in their education.
