Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach Transitional Kindergarten (a version of public school pre-k in California, that gives younger students a two-year kindergarten experience). I work at a Title I school in a Title I school district, which means the majority of our students are low income. We have a high percentage of English Language Learners.
This new school year, some of my new students arrived self-assured and eager to learn while others are timid and not happy to be away from home.
My Project
Children my students’ age learn best through play and interacting with others. These career costumes will encourage students to learn appropriate ways to interact with each other and learn things from others that they don’t know yet. Children retain more information when learning from play and interacting with each other. It will make them excited about the possibilities their future can hold.
I will integrate activities into this play that involve reading, writing, and math so that students can experience how those things are used in real life and why they are important to learn.
For example, mail carriers use reading to deliver mail, and scientists and doctors use writing and numbers when recording their observations.
