Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach 34 self-contained special needs students.

We reside in a Title I school, which means there is very little funding, yet we have such a high need for supplies!

My students are all amazing, unique, loving, and energetic humans! They are vibrant and brave, active, and creative. My students have a variety of diagnoses including but not limited to Autism Spectrum Disorder, ADHD, ED, Down Syndrome, LD, and multiple disabilities. I have verbal students as well as nonverbal students. All of my students have difficulty with communication skills, social skills, and struggle to process sensory information.

Our class is bare and supplies are minimal. My students deserve the best, and at the very least deserve the items deemed necessary to help them self-regulate, de-stress and provide imperative sensory stimulation.

My Project

Photography allows us to access intentional, social, and task-focused engagement, but art can be intimidating for students with disabilities, who may prefer rigidity, structure, and clear definitions of correct and incorrect work. My students will also get hands-on experience that can be useful throughout their lives. I teach vocational skills class, social skills class, life skills class and work with seniors on their senior projects (which can be photography). Our students are in a self-contained special education classroom and love creating! I brought in a disposable camera to share the difference on its last legs. We are asking for help in getting a good camera which can last us a long while to give our kiddos all the opportunity they wouldn't get otherwise. Our school does not have the funds to support our class activities, so your help donating to this project is appreciated! I have introduced photography in informal ways in mini-lessons, in my collaborative work supporting students with disabilities in K–12 classrooms, and I’ve seen its benefits in both situations. In addition to improving engagement, photography provides students with disabilities with a subject that’s accessible and allows them to participate actively and inclusively alongside their peers.

There are so many benefits that are intertwined with photography.

Photography encourages independence. Students’ creative and unique perspectives are valued and empowered. Students gain flexibility in their thinking, and students improve their communication skills.

We will be working on photography and tracking their progress with pictures along the way. So far we have learned the basic parts of a camera and looked at a disposable camera. They have loved every bit of it so far! Aside from documenting your journey through life, photography is an EXCELLENT stress reliever and inspires imagination. I cannot wait to see what magic the students will create!
