Giving Readers Some Food for Thought

My students need at least 30 copies of "Chew On This" and "Seedfolks" to explore how economics, relationships, and communities influence and are influenced by food.

My Students

Feeding hungry minds is the first step toward satiating hungry stomachs. This year, we are working toward understanding and improving ourselves and our communities with many literary and informational texts. Students will learn how words and stories can promote important and tangible social change.

My students attend a PK-8 turnaround school in Maryland.

Nearly 90% of these students receive free or reduced meals. Last year, these students made Annual Yearly Progress for the first time in 13 years and we are eager to sustain this forward momentum. It is even more important that students leave middle school with the skills and drive they need to communicate their innovative ideas; this is what we are focused on this year.

My Project

If students are to be engaged in reading, text cannot exist in a vacuum! "Seedfolks" and "Chew On This" tackle issues of economics, community, and social change in fictional and non-fictional ways respectively. During this unit of study, students will access information and artistic impressions of the relationships between food and communities. While practicing literacy skills, students will also explore community structures like local government and the process by which bills become law. By the end of the unit, students will have drafted their own food-based legislation to improve some aspect of their community. Mastery of language arts objectives is certainly important, but students will be able to take away so much more from this unit. Students will practice making healthier snack choices, tending to the environment, and choosing to be a smarter consumer during the course of this unit, as well; these are skills that students will use for their whole lives.

Obesity, litter, and vacant lots.

My students and their community are affected by these concerns on a daily basis. Using the lenses of "Seedfolks" and "Chew On This," my students will continue in their development as the readers, writers, and speakers who will change this reality for the better.
