Giving Our Students a Voice

My Students

Our classroom is filled with diverse learners with a wide range of abilities and disabilities. We serve students with Autism, Down syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, and other special needs. We teach academics alongside a variety of important life and school skills, including social skills, self-management, and functional/ adaptive skills. All of our students are assigned to a general education homeroom where they are each included the maximum extent possible.

Some of the most important skills we can foster in our students are independence and communication.

Our students need explicit instruction and repeated practice to build this important life skill. With continued practice and support, our students will increase their success in a variety of inclusive settings. Our goal is to give each student the tools they need to be successful at school and in their community, both academically and functionally.

My Project

The students in our classroom communicate in a variety of ways, including verbal speech, sign language, gestures, and pictures. Many of our students are not yet at the point of being able to use verbal communication, but they all deserve the chance to have a voice to be able to communicate their likes, dislikes, and thoughts. These students often benefit from access to Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) devices, and one app that we commonly use for our students is TouchChat on the iPad. We would like a license for one copy of TouchChat to install on one of our classroom iPads. Students will be to access this device throughout their school days, whenever they need to communicate.

Every child deserves a voice and to be understood.

Access to the TouchChat app will make sure that all students in our classroom can use words to communicate. Thank you for empowering our students and their communication!
