Tucked away between public housing, private homes, a high school, and the subway sits a wonderful Title One school. The children in my class come from very diverse socioeconomic households which include everything from "traditional" families to foster family homes to those who struggle with homelessness. We are a very diverse school with many different backgrounds in one. Many students come in not speaking any English and some parents require translators to communicate. This year, my children have the option of learning at home and I am here to help!
"All kids need a little help, a little hope, and someone who believes in them." Magic Johnson.
As for my children, some have disabilities varying from physical and cognitive delays, to children who receive an array of services. From the moment they walk into the classroom, it is transformed. They enter eager, full of the desire to learn the answers to a million burning questions, and have so many things to share. It is then that our classroom transforms into a curious, exciting, and warm place to be!
My Project
Going back a few years ago, I have taken it upon myself to purchase various educational apps like Brainpop, Starfall and others that I knew my Kindergarten children were into that year. All which teach reading, literacy and math in a fun way. However the past few years my school has been purchasing a school wide subscription for these apps as well as one that I have found to be great for both teachers and children. iReady helps the children who are ahead continue on that path while also assisting those who require a bit more practice. As for me, it provides more than just a snapshot of where my children are but also provides me with lessons and intervention for each child.
Adding FUN to learning creates the best educational experience possible-T Chilver.
My children LOVE these apps along with our CALM, MUSIC and GoNoodle apps. We use them for learning about mindfulness, breathing and dance breaks. The only problem is that 8 of our iPads no longer update causing us not to be able to use them along with many apps. By adding this iPad and the cases I will be able to give another child the SAME opportunity as their peers. The added case will keep another iPad we have protected as its case is cracked. My goal is to keep the children in my community all learning on the same playing field with the same materials as their peers. Remember although these children may be MY students they are OUR future!
