My students need stools, ball chairs, floor cushions and risers to have comfortable seating options in our classroom! If students are comfortable, they are more likely to do their best work!
I get a whole new group of students this August! I am so excited to finally meet them and get started on our path to learning together.
I just finished my first year of teaching.
During this past year, I learned so much, not only about teaching but about first graders.
One thing that really stuck with me this year is how energetic my kiddos were! They consistently need time to move around, dance, or stretch. I also found that it was difficult for them to sit at their desks for very long. This project would help my students excel better in class and become more comfortable, making them more likely to do their best work.
My Project
First graders need more movement throughout the day, without being confined to a chair and desk for the majority of their school day. This applies even more so to the students with attention disorders, autism, etc., of which we have a significant number attending our school. This project would provide students the daily choice in their seats, as well as increase their motivation and focus. With seating like exercise balls, cushions on the floor to sit at the coffee table, and risers for standing desks, my students will be able to have constant movement, allowing for more efficient instructional time. They will need the clipboards to use as a writing surface when working in alternative seating.
Giving students choice for something so simple as a seat allows the student to have more accountability and also helps their focus and motivation during instructional time.
I have found that my students are able to work so much more efficiently when they are comfortable or able to move in some way. The listed items will help us achieve our academic goals!
We do several movement and dance videos throughout the day, which is helpful to a degree. For the remainder of the time, the students are expected to be in their seats or sitting on a carpet. Most first graders struggle to sit still for those longer periods of time. These supplies would be used daily to enable students to be able to have some sort of movement while completing work.
