My Project

Have you ever performed a flame test lab while in a chemistry class? If so, it’s probably one of the most memorable academic experiences you have from high school. Burning things and looking at the colors that are produced is both an eye opening and magical experience for most students. Since I work with alternative students at an Area Learning Center (ALC), open flames are not even remotely an option, not to mention our complete lack of an actual laboratory space is not conducive to many traditional labs. What we can do as an alternative to the flame test lab is look at the bright line emission spectra of several elements, only we don’t have a spectrum tube power supply, nor do we have the necessary spectra tubes to do these studies.

I want to ensure that my alternative students have every option that their traditional education peers have, even within the confines of my limited classroom and meager budget.

Alternative students are often those who have been excluded from the sciences and from participating in hands-on labs, usually as a result of factors beyond their control. Many of my students have suffered from chronic absenteeism, which has led to them missing many of the labs and hands-on experiences of their traditional education peers. With these gas spectra tubes and discharge apparatus, we will explore the various models of the atom while expanding our understanding of how scientists are able to predict the elements and compounds present on other celestial bodies both in our galaxy and beyond.

Mr. Schoch will only receive his materials if this project is fully funded by August 8.
