Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I have 23 kindergarten students. Resources are limited in my school community. Of my 23 students, half of them have access to online communication and distance learning by sharing devices with siblings or using their parents' mobile phones. Some that have devices, lack access to the internet or wi-fi, some parents admitting to running out of data.
The disparity of resources has become overwhelmingly real.
It is a struggle. They are saddened by the school closure, miss their classmates, and ask me when I am going to open the school again! I sent home packets and assign online course work, we meet weekly on Zoom for brief lessons and check-ins, but only half of my students are consistently participating.
My Project
The Chromebook and headphones should give two of my students (they are brothers) access to the much-needed device that they don't have, which has kept them from participating in any of the distance learning that relies on technology since mid-March. These resources will provide them access to regularly communicate with me, their teacher, facilitate continuous learning that is not available without these resources, and equally important, help them get in touch with their classmates when we do online class meetings.
These students have demonstrated will and grit, and will certainly gain academic growth if they have the resources at their disposal.
I would like them to see we are rooting for them, and are pulling together to provide resources for those in need.
