Giving A Voice To Students with ASD

My students need assistive technology to increase their ability to answer questions and participate in class discussions. Most of these students have limited to no verbal language.

My Students

We are a school of 500+ students in Livonia MI. My students are made up of general education students and students who are in a self contained classroom for those who have moderate to severe autism.

In our center we have several students who are nonverbal or minimally verbal and require assistive technology to aid in communication.

Assistive technology can be high tech or low tech and helps to enhance communication in school. We have students who also participate in the peer buddy program and we use the assistive technology to communicate with their buddies during activities.

My Project

Giving our students an alternative communication device to assist in their communication is vital for them to communicate in their educational environment. We will use this assistive technology for them to interact and use in their environment.

My students will use the assistive/augmentative communication device to answer comprehension questions, to comment on activities, and to request things in their environment.

They will also be able to request things while with peers and teachers giving them more independence in their educational environment.

The assistive technology will give them a voice to demonstrate their understanding and ability to interact in their educational environment.
