Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Many of the students that I teach are from underserved communities. As we know, fresh foods including fruits and vegetables provide essential nutrients that power us all throughout the day! This is especially important for young developing minds and bodies. Many students often complain about the cafeteria provided foods and choose not to eat lunch, versus bringing their own, as currently, there is no place to keep their food fresh and cool until mealtime. This can be especially detrimental to their comprehension, engagement and development-- particularly those who stay after classes for extracurricular activities for a total of nearly 10 plus hours per day.

I would like to provide my students with a cool, clean space for them to safely store their meals, snacks and lunches until ready for consumption.

Students can also store their waters in the mini fridge, as my students often avoid the fountains as well, due to the old plumbing in the building which gives the water an odd, and less than satisfying taste. This appliance could also double for our classroom activities, where I can store food for our culturally curated culinary tastings, where the various classes taste foods from various countries in and for the Spanish class, as is relevant to our Spanish curriculum.

Additionally, I would like to assist in providing a manner in which students who would like a more hearty meal, could warm their foods during the intermission. By supplying the classroom with a small microwave, students could store their meals in the fridge, then when mealtime comes could quickly prepare their warm foods in a safe and efficient manner via the microwave, thus providing them with a hearty, filling meal, so that they could recharge and press on throughout the school day.
