Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Computers have lots of memory but no imagination. For the last nine years I have had the privilege of teaching Social Studies to imaginative kids at a public middle school in New York City without computers. I work with 120 students each day. Over 80% of my school’s population is eligible for free or reduced lunches. Still, families are struggling. They are doing their best to keep up with their children’s educational needs, but it has become increasingly difficult to do so in these difficult financial times. Over 70% of my students are Hispanic. This group has the highest drop-out rate among all groups in America. I stress the importance of a good education with my students. In a few years, they will need to compete for jobs in today’s challenging world.
A 21st Century education requires knowledge of computer technology. Unfortunately, computers are not available in my classroom. In a school with a population of more than 1100, we have only 30 computers available for their use on any day! We are in desperate need of computers. Many of my students do not have access to computers at home, and those that do have computers do not always have Internet access. There are few computer resources available in the community. The local library has been closed for renovations. The school library, which has two computer stations. is only available for student use during lunch periods on specific days of the week.
I would like to have a Hewlett Packard laptop in my classroom so that the students would have access to a computer in class and during after school hours. We are lucky enough to have a wireless network so that they would have internet access too. This will benefit my students immensely by keeping them engaged and focused. They are hard working and amazing children and will use the computer to research materials for their Social Studies courses, as well as prepare PowerPoint presentations and create short movies.
Your help will give my students the HP computer they need and make it possible for them to receive the well-rounded education they deserve.
