Hello! I am a special education teacher at Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School in Schenectady, NY. My class of 13 students is a 12:1:2 self-contained classroom with 3-5th grade students who function 2-3 years below grade level.
They are a diverse population of students who face various issues at home and in their community.
Our classroom is like a family and is a place for learning, growing and feeling safe and respected.
I inherited this classroom within the last month and the classroom was basically empty. I have spent nearly $1500 of my own money to supplement the classroom with materials, supplies and decorations.
My Project
Our students are currently functioning 2-3 years below grade level. As a result, our daily curriculum is heavily focused on reading, writing and math skills. We rarely have time to fit in science and social students daily and need to do so once or twice a week.
These Scholastic Classroom Magazines would allow us to implement a science and social studies curriculum in an engaging way!
Because we don't have a lot of time to focus on these subjects, these magazines will allow us to effectively provide our students will interesting information that aligns with the state standards and is a fun way to obtain the information!
