Have you ever sat down to read a book, do a math problem, or write a paper and realized how difficult that simple task really is? This is a struggle for my students on a daily basis. All of my students have some sort of severe disability and they struggle with reading, writing, basic math, and all other aspects of the school day.
Every student in my class has a severe disability that impacts the way they learn.
Most of them also encounter problems outside of the classroom that make learning even harder. Each student in my room is in special education and most of them have a learning or cognitive disability that makes school an insanely hard task. I teach at an urban school that has a large population of its student come from low-income households. This on top of their disability makes school a task that none of them want to work on. All of my students have the ability in them, they just need a little encouragement.
My Project
I am asking for a hammock chair and stand, a fiber optic lamp, and tangle fidget toys for my students to have in my sensory corner. I would like to create a sensory corner so that my special education students have a safe place to go and calm down when they are feeling frustrated or overwhelmed.
I teach special education and my classroom is made up of students that are consider some of the most "exceptional" learners in our school.
With the addition of this sensory corner in my classroom, my students will have somewhere to go that allows them to calm down without having to leave the room. I currently do not have a space like this and that results in them having to leave the classroom in order to calm down. That results in losing out on valuable instruction time.
