This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students enjoy using compasses in the classroom to help them explore geometrical concepts. Unfortunately, they are not able to bring the school's compasses home to continue these explorations.
My students are inner city high school students, who are extremely motivated and excited to learn mathematics.
However, they do not have access to the resources we use at school when they go home. Our school prevents students from borrowing materials, fearing that they will not be returned.
My Project
Being able to bring home a compass will allow students to continue their exploration of geometrical concepts outside of the classroom. Students will be able to practice geometric constructions and develop understanding of the theorems and axioms of this great subject. Having access at home to this simple technology will allow my students to learn mathematics on pace with their affluent peers across the country.
Providing students with this simple tools with encourage their curiosity of mathematics to grow.
Having access to compasses outside of the classroom with allow students to think about and engage in mathematics in ways that are not possible without these tools.
