This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
“Education is evolving due to the impact of the Internet. We cannot teach our students in the same manner in which we were taught. Change is necessary to engage students not in the curriculum we are responsible for teaching, but in school. Period.” - April Chamberlain
My students have an immense amount potential, they just need significant help getting there.
Our school is a Title I school, which indicates that we have a large population of students coming from low-income homes. Every day, I see students arrive at school from broken homes, shelters, and public housing. Some share a one bedroom apartment with 5 or 6 people. Their meals are often provided through a meager food stamp budget, or the free breakfast and lunch provided at the school.
With so much stress going on in the home, it can be hard to be completely engaged at school, especially when you are struggling with a learning disability. Many of my students are more than a year below grade level in reading, writing, and math. It is vital that we use every available entry point for learning to occur. This is why my students need creative and innovative ways to engage them in activities.
My Project
Not only will having Kindle Fire Tablets and headphones in the classroom increase my students' knowledge and skills in managing technology, but it will also engage them to learn in a way few other strategies can. I work in a classroom that has a high population of both Special Needs students and English Language Learners. For learners like this, it can be a challenge to engage them. I am positive that tablets could open doors to huge improvements in reading, writing, math, and the content areas. There are thousands of apps out there that increase all areas of learning. Having a Kindle Tablet will allow me to find more engaging books for the most disengaged reader. Students could have books read to them, learn new vocabulary words, practice their math facts, organize their writing, and research topics for projects. I could go on forever, but I'll end with this: think about how much you do with your technology devices daily, then imagine what that could do in an educational setting for a child. in need.
My students' eyes light up when they are engaged with technology, and it's not just from the reflection of the screen.
We live in a world where knowledge of technology is becoming essential in order to thrive in the work environment. Most of my high-need students are "techies" already, and can master a tablet and computer with ease. Why not tap into this skill in order to ensure that they are not only technology experts, but reading, writing, and math experts as well?
