Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

F. Scott Fitzgerald said there are no second acts in American lives. My dream for my students, who are in the first act of their lives, is that they will learn something powerful from an American masterpiece and become self aware, self sustainable, and leaders in their rural low income community

My AP English students live in the rural South where our high school is the only high school in our town.

Our students will be positively influenced by an American masterpiece where they will study outstanding style and prose. They will learn more about their place in America's dream. They will, with hard work, become the American dream--their American dream.

My Project

The Great Gatsby is a book about many things including the American dream and it's redefinition, hypocrisy, and place in our lives. What were the roaring 20s? What does wealth mean? How can it be earned so quickly? Lost so quickly? Why would someone want it? Is it possible to recreate ourselves? How can this all relate to the 2008 recession? How does The Great Gatsby help facilitate these conversations? Not to mention, a film adaptation starring Leonardo DiCaprio comes out Christmas day 2012, which will help put the book back in the current public discourse while my students are reading it.

Not just my students, but MY WHOLE HIGH SCHOOL, is only 76 books away from having a classroom set where students can take the book home and read it independently, as well as in class.

This set will be used for years to come! Many high schools already use it this way for the reasons mentioned above. The school year is short enough, my students NEED and DESERVE to be able to finish a 200 page book, as legendary as this, in a few precious weeks. Please help! Thank you!
