Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

I teach at a large suburban school on the east coast. My students are very upbeat and have a deep love of music. Research suggests music is an important component of education. Also, research suggests students who participate in music demonstrate higher academic outcomes. With that said, in addition to being excellent student musicians, my students demonstrate academic achievement.

Over the years, my students make the honor roll, inducted into the National Honor Society, and participate in College Dual enrollment programs.

Also, many of my students take Advanced Placement, Talented and Gifted, as well as Honors Courses.

My Project

How many times have you heard or seen a Marching Band? What is the most prominent sound you hear? I suggest you hear the sound of Drums. The drums are the heartbeat of any band.

Since its humble beginning in August 2006, our Marching Band has established a legacy of excellence.

Over the years, the Marching Band has won many prestigious regional and national awards.

The years of consistently playing and moving instruments take a toll, especially on percussion instruments. Screws, lug nuts, tension rods come loose, and some are lost on a charter bus, school parking lot, school bus, or the football field.

Therefore, I am asking your support to “Give The Drum Line Some” by helping us obtain new drums for our drum line. The new instruments consist of 5-Yamaha 8300 Field-Series Bass Drums, 5-Yamaha 9400 SFZ Piccolo Marching Snare Drums, 1- Yamaha Field Corps Marching Quints, and the cases for all the instruments.

Over the years, our marching drums have become worn. Some have missing pieces, and the finish on the drums has faded. Consequently, when our students perform in public, they feel embarrassed because their instruments do not look as good as other schools.

This is where you, our friends, can help us “Give The Drum Line Some!” I believe that obtaining new drums line instruments will make us look better and allow our students to feel better about their performances and not be ashamed.
