W.E. is an inner city school in Kansas City where children do not have access to a lot of books at home. We serve students that are 70% English as second language learners and we have over 20 languages spoken. The students in my reading classroom include a majority of English language learners who have been in the country for less than five years. They have "graduated" out of an ELL classroom and are now in my regular reading class that helps them get caught up to grade level. I have the lowest 20 kids in each grade 3-6. Many of my students came here as refugees from different countries. They have had few belongings of their own, due to being uprooted from their native country. This year, I have students from Thailand, Kenya, Somalia, Uganda, Tanzania, Mexico and Guatemala. My dream is to operate a classroom library that students can check out books from me and take them home and maybe even possibly earn the chance to keep forever if they love the book and can explain why they want to keep it! I've never loved students as much as these, because they are so eager to learn!
My Project
Kofi Annans quote "Literacy is a bridge from misery to hope" tells us that we need to give kids hope through Literacy. 100% of my students are on Free lunch, most of them are immigrants from other countries and they need to learn to read.
ALL of my students 80 students are at least two grade levels behind and don't really like to read because they aren't good at it.
I would like to give them plenty of access to popular books that they WANT to read in an effort to motivate the to read MORE.
Getting low readers to read is challenging, having exciting books that they WANT to read and WILL read is difficult. I hope that by letting them choose these titles they will be super motivated to read!
