My broadcasting students come from a wide range of backgrounds. Our school is considered low income; as a result, I often have students come into my broadcasting class with little or no knowledge regarding the field of journalism or the equipment used to produce it. The students range from 9th to 12th grade and most have never had a journalism course before or even used a video camera.

Our broadcasting class is only a year and a half old. When we started, we were handed equipment that was as old as the students (if not older). Despite the lack of equipment, the class has continued to grow in numbers. They are doing wonderful things and deserve a chance to take their work to the next level.

The problem is we don't have enough technology (mics, camera, etc.)to go around. In addition, the omni-directional mics are not the best mics for all situations. If the students were able to use a lavaliere mic, it would improve the quality of the broadcast, provide more students the opportunity to participate in the class (hands on), and prepare them for the technology they might see in college classes and the real world.

Your help will ensure that the broadcasting program at my school continues to grow. Our program provides the students with an opportunity to develop real-world skills. It also gives the students of the school a place to express themselves, explore topics of interest, and voice their opinions.
