Give Students A Voice With Headset Microphones

I am the school librarian at an urban middle school where about 2/3 of the students qualify for free or reduced-price lunches. It is a very diverse school -- the majority of my students are Asian-American, Latino, or African-American, but many other groups are represented. Many of our students do not have computers or Internet access at home, so they depend on the school library or the public library for access to technology.

I would like to encourage students to use technology to create content and share their creativity with the world. We have 16 new PCs in the library, and students are already blogging, using PowerPoint, and typing papers during class time, as well as playing games and listening to music before and after school. I would like to expand their creative computing opportunities by introducing them to podcasting, as well as adding audio commentary to their class projects on other sites. However, because we are using PCs without built in microphones, they are currently not able to do so.

We need 16 headset microphones so that students can record their voices. Teachers are eager to work with me on storytelling projects, audio blogging, podcasting, virtual author visits, and much more. My book review club would also use the microphones to add voice reviews to their book blog. I would also be able to work with entire classes to create projects on Voicethread.com, a free site where students can upload images and then add voice comments and share stories. The microphones would open new opportunities for learning about technology, sharing ideas, promoting books and reading, and doing innovative class projects that go beyond writing a paper or making a poster.

My students have limited access to technology, and need the opportunity to learn how to do more than play games and watch music videos online. They need to use technology to collaborate, create content, and learn independently. Giving them the ability to record their voices and stories, or to chat live with authors and other "virtual" visitors, would inspire them to do more with technology, and also make their class projects more inspiring and exciting. Having headset microphones will open up a whole realm of possibilities for us!
