Help me give my students online access to news articles from around the world written at different reading levels from Newsela in order to meet the needs of all my readers.
I am delighted to work at an urban school that serves approximately 500 students in K -5th grade. Our school is racially and socioeconomically diverse; 27% of our students are Hispanic, 28% are Black and 38% are White. Fifty-three percent of the students receive free or reduced lunch, and we serve five surrounding neighborhoods.
As a public school in a diverse community, our students are aware of and discussing social issues throughout the day.
These topics are part of their day-to-day life and as community members they are learning more about how these issues affect them and their families.
To help our students grow as community members, we select resources from a variety of places to help them read, reflect and write about authentic topics. They work independently, collaboratively and with adults to think through important issues. They are hungry for knowledge, and ready and willing to look at information from a variety of perspectives.
My Project
My project will give our school access to Newsela Pro for an entire year. Newsela Pro allows students and teachers to access content information and articles on current events written at 5 different reading levels. Additionally, Newsela Pro will allow the teachers to keep track of how much the students are reading and how well they are comprehending the article.
Primary sources, current events, pros/cons of societal issues, fiction, biographies, how-to descriptions, and more will be available to our students and teachers to engage and inform all of the readers in our school.
This project will allow powerful learning and conversations to take place for children reading at all levels in our school.
