My students need basic art supplies as we do not have much to work with. In order to make art work at our school we need paper, pencils, erasers, and Sharpies to start off the year.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our school is located in an impoverished, urban neighborhood where our students' safety is not always ensured while they are at home. It is for this reason we do all we can to ensure a safe place to learn at our school for students and members of the community. We serve students up to the 8th grade level, totaling about 470 students in all. Despite their challenges, our students are vibrant and excited to learn new things. For the past few years our school has been building itself back up from a series of struggles and we are currently on the road to proficiency.
The art room is a place where all students are considered successful.
We love art at our school, we just need some help with supplies because, unfortunately, the arts do not always receive the proper funding. Art helps our students through tough situations, helps them become better problem-solvers, powerful thinkers, and well-rounded individuals.
My Project
Our students carry a lot with them to school each day. They have experienced many things that even adults should never have to go through. Our students need the therapeutic and freeing atmosphere that art can provide to strengthen them as students and members of the community. Art explores every school subject and can be adapted to any student regardless of ability.
Creative expression is essential to the development of our children.
With these basic supplies, such as drawing paper and pencils, our artists will be on their way to creating beautiful artworks to better themselves, our school, and our community.
