Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our students attend elementary school in East Boston. Our student population is diverse in every sense of the word. We have families from all over the world and many of our students are bilingual. They are curious and eager learners who love to come to school every day. Our school is considered low-income and has been hit hard with budget cuts for a few years in a row and therefore, we can't afford many of the materials we deserve. Our families and teachers are deeply engaged and committed to ensuring their children receive the best education possible. This year my Inclusion Special Education classroom includes a variety of different special needs.
My Project
Our classroom library is tired - there's no other way to say it! From outdated books that won't hold their attention, to well-loved worn out books that need to be replaced - it is time for an upgrade.
We need new, short books to help second graders build excitement and enthusiasm around reading.
Many of our lower level books are too "babyish" for my growing second graders. They are eager for books that they can read that are about topics they enjoy. I know with brand new books, together we will build not just the skills to read, but a love of reading.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
