My Students

My mother once told me that books are like friends, and you can never be truly alone in the presence of a great book. I held onto that quote throughout my childhood, seeking books as refuge when my life felt chaotic.

My students are beginning to realize that books allow us to explore the world without ever leaving the classroom.

We had a discussion comparing our library to Toy Story, and we wondered whether the characters in our books come alive when we're not looking.

My Project

As a teacher, my greatest obstacle is ensuring that there are enough "good fit" books for every one of my students. "Good fit" books are challenging, accessible, and interesting. In a classroom where some students are flying through chapter books while others are stuck on letter sounds, this proves to be a difficult task.

I teach at a school where 95.2% of students are socioeconomically disadvantaged and 67.7% are English Learners.

Only 35% of adults living within my school's zip code have graduated from high school. I need my students to make a year and a half's worth of reading growth (or more) in order to prepare them for the college or career of their dreams. We need "good fit" books that will not only push them to the next reading level, but that will make them fall in love with reading in the process.
