Give Students Who Are Non-Verbal the Tools Needed to Communicate!
My students need 3 iPad Air 2s to increase their ability to communicate with their families, peers, and staff since they are all non verbal with severe disabilities.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My day is entirely decided by the current needs of my students. Being able to work with students with such unique needs means our day is never predictable and never boring! Seeing how hard my students work at completing what many see as a simple task inspires me on a daily basis.
I currently have 13 students all with severe or profound disabilities.
They also have physical disabilities, behavioral problems, and are non verbal. Every day my students are faced with obstacles most people will never know. Although they all have severe disabilities they are all individuals with amazing personalities! With the help of our school, my students work on a daily basis to increase their academic and vocational skills. It may take some of my students years to learn to the steps needed to sort their laundry, but they never give up and have more dedication than most! They inspire me to be a better teacher and to constantly improve in order to support them better. My students are faced with challenges every moment of their day, but they are always smiling and always willing to try. Our school provides them a safe and structured environment, freedom from judgment, and the support of the most dedicated staff I have ever worked with.
My Project
All of my students are non verbal or have limited verbal skills, only able to speak around ten words. Current communication devices offered to low income students in a public school are extremely out dated and not user friendly. Communication devices offered to my students all require voice recording and use of removable pictures that only give them a few options. Having Ipads for my class would provide the students the opportunity to increase their ability to communicate with their families, peers, and staff. There are currently thousands of apps out their designed to help students with severe disabilities, but my students are missing out. Having access to Ipads puts the entire world in the hands of my students and will allow them to see and experience things they will most likely never get to experience. Ipads can be used for increasing life skills, building social skills, adapting grade level material, and most importantly provide them a chance to express themselves.
The students in my class struggle every day completing tasks that most of us do not think twice about.
Identifying numbers, colors, putting shoes on, and learning how to open and close a door are all skills my students work on and may require years to master. Providing students with Ipads will change their academic lives forever. It will provide them new learning opportunities that they have never been given before. Ipads will give a voice to students who have been voiceless for too long.
