Help me give my students more social studies and reading resources in the classroom!
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My students are 7 to 8-year-olds with a mix of students with special education requirements and students at general ed level.
We are a Title I school, and the students come from low-income homes, but they are my wonderful learners.
They come in every day with challenges, and I am excited to make their day better. Some students in the class deal with homelessness, some have to fend for themselves at home while parents are working, and some live with other family members who are raising them. My kids deserve the best, and I want to give it to them. Unfortunately, I can’t do it alone.
At our school, we don’t have a Social Studies curriculum. We are given standards and a couple of resources and expected to teach them everything in those standards. These resources I am trying to get will help my class by giving us additional resources for social studies. I have had to become very creative this year without many resources, and these books are aligned to our standards, and will give us a way to integrate our literacy block and social studies together. Elementary schools don’t give much notice to science and social studies anymore, but I believe that it is important to show these kids all about the world around them.
These books will make great read alouds about each standard... the books cover everything from Georgia Economics to James Oglethorpe to Georgia Government.
They will also give students another resource when working on projects and writing about social studies.
