My students have been reading so much - this semester a few of them read the first book they've ever read by themselves - and this is in 10th grade! I attribute this chiefly to the fact that we read every day and I have - or had - a vibrant, diverse classroom library in which I could find them engaging books.
Unfortunately, our little town of Paradise was recently devastated by wildfires and many of our books were lost - also, many of my students are living in remote locations and do not have access to a library.
I don't want to lose the momentum we developed in our classes - my students need books to keep discovering a love for reading and maybe even to distract them from the difficulties that lie ahead in the important work of rebuilding our town.
One of my priorities this year has been helping students rediscover the joys of reading and we've been making some remarkable progress in finding and reading books they love.
However, students have recently been displaced by the Campfire wildfires and many of them lost not only all of their books, but also access to libraries because of the remote locations they've relocated to.
These e-readers will give students the opportunity to access a wide range of books and will encourage them to explore new and exciting possibilities when it comes to reading. I can't wait to introduce them to some amazing new titles.
