My Students
My typical day is not in one room, but traveling from room to room. I teach math to special needs children in a kindergarten to eighth grade school. I am trying to integrate technology more into their math curriculum. I would love to teach them how to code from a technology and math viewpoint.
My students are special needs children who suffer from emotional disturbance and come from low socioeconomic settings.
Most of them live in high risk areas of violence, and their school settings are their only source of positive influence. Above whatever outside situations my students may come from, I see a lot intelligence and potential in every single one of them. As long as I can strive to make learning fun to them, I see how great and successful they can end up. I see how interested and engaged the students get when technology is involved in the classroom. At that point, learning becomes fun and they can focus. Some of them don't have computers at home. My school is a K-8 special education setting with the most wonderful and caring staff. Everyone has their focus on the children's well being, safety, and academic success. We all strive to make sure our students earn whatever skills they need to become successful adults and make the right choices in life.
My Project
Chromebooks are affordable, portable, and give students plenty of applications to strive in education. One of the big goals in education these days is not only integrating technology in education, but teaching kids how to program and how to code. I am currently earning another degree which is in the field of instructional technology and am learning the skills that are needed to be able to teach our children this new big proposed education goal, which is coding. I will also use these Chromebooks so the students can work on different online math curriculums that are individualized and self-paced. Children love technology, and that is where education has been falling into. Some schools are excelling in using technology in every one of their subject areas. I would like to try to bring that into my school.
We all want our students and our own children to be ready for the world ahead of them.
21st Century skills are important for anyone's future. Kids need to be as up-to-date as adults. When we teach our students, we need to utilize what we can from technology because 90% of the time technology isn't being utilized correctly. If a child can learn to program early on, they will have a great understanding of computer science as well as mathematics. There are a lot great software tools that can be used.
