This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
What I love most about my group of twenty-two special needs students is their desire to learn! They have often been discouraged because they can't always find a place to relax and read. My days are filled with pulling small groups to teach reading and math skills.
Students often refer to my special education classroom as my house, since because of limited space, I teach in a mobile unit located in the back of the school.
Jumping up and down in their general education classrooms or hallways, students often say, "Mrs. Whittington, can I go with you!"
I want my classroom/"house" to spark an interest in space and science; where students will not only learn to read, but also a place that provides an atmosphere that promotes curiosity, and comfort. I want laying on the floor with a decodable text to be a normal expectation!
My goal is to build reading skills and study habits that student will generalize into other areas of their lives. I believe the habit of reading can be learned and cultivated.
Please help me make this classroom a reality for my special population and their friends!
