Teacher Professional Development: I need to attend these workshops to be able to collaborate with colleagues and gain valuable knowledge that will impact my students learning. <profdevpilot>
"Because my teacher believed in me, I never gave up. Now I am flying towards my dreams." ~ Heidi McDonald.
This is the type of classroom I strive to provide for my students, the best possible environment to learn and grow academically but also to inspire dreams and aspirations.
This is my 9th year as a Deaf Education teacher in a public school setting.
I have a self-contained class that serves students in grades kindergarten through 5th.I have the only deaf/hard of hearing self-contained classroom in the county's public school system and currently have 6 students in 4 different grades that are bused from various districts throughout the county. I have the unique position of being able to collaborate with many wonderful colleagues in multiple grade levels to be able to best meet the needs of the students we share. In 2013 I had the honor of being the recipient of the Golden Apple Award and was one of 5 finalists for the Golden Apple Teacher of the Year Award.
My Project
This year I am implementing the "Daily 5" with my students in our room. The "Daily 5" is a structured approach to reading and writing that helps foster good literacy skills and independent learning. By attending the two day workshop being instructed by the authors of the "Daily 5", I will gain invaluable knowledge that I can integrate and apply in my classroom. I will learn how to best help my students to become independent and accountable for their own learning as well as how to structure time so my students are productive and accountable. I will gain valuable insight into using tracking and assessment tools to plan lessons, conduct and interpret accurate assessments, and measure and track progress. I will be given the tools and the strategies necessary to immediately impact my students' literacy instruction that will provide them the foundation to be lifelong learners and the ability to attain their dreams.
Having the opportunity to attend these workshops will help me to build on the current knowledge I have gained this year by implementing the "Daily 5" in my classroom.
I will acquire tools and strategies for immediate impact in my classroom, be able to collaborate with colleagues and gain valuable knowledge and confidence in myself. I will learn new and invaluable methods to create plans to target students' individual needs and be able to maximize the benefits of a structured classroom.
