Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Every day my first graders are working hard. They are creating projects, writing stories, and reading up a storm! We spend one hour every day on Writing Workshop. Students write and illustrate amazing books. They try out narratives, nonfiction, and poetry writing.
I teach 24 bright and adorable first grade students!
We work and play at a Title I school in Northern California, in a building that is over 50 years old and in need of repair. Nearly all of my students are English Language Learners. As their teacher, it is my job to try to provide all of the resources my students need and deserve. We rely on the generous support of folks in and outside of our community. My students are so thrilled and thankful for everything we have!
My Project
My students will use the school supplies to write and illustrate books. We print story book packets with lines for writing and boxes for drawing. This helps students clearly sequence their stories. Of course paper, pencils, and crayons are needed for this work, but also for much of the work we do all day long! My students will learn to persevere as writers, editing and revising their work until it is ready to be proudly shared and celebrated with the class. I have also asked for Scholastic magazines, which I have used in the past. These resources are an amazing source of nonfiction literature! We use them as part of a week long theme focus. The magazines include an online component with educational games and videos. The video is available in Spanish, which is very helpful for my students who are new to the country and speak no English (yet!). My students look forward to this every week!
This project will make a difference because students will not need to worry any more about running out of tools vital to their learning.
When their pencil is down to a nub or their glue stick is used up, there are more supplies ready to save the day! For students who sometimes deal with adult stressors of not having enough of basic necessities, this will absolutely make their lives better.
