Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My students are from all over the world and they come to me speaking Spanish, Quichua, Somali, Arabic, Pashto, Dari, French and Swahili! They are new to Minnesota and want to learn about our American language and culture. I teach them about Frida Kahlo, Elizabeth Catlett, Shepard Fairey, Keith Haring, Vincent van Gogh, Claes Oldenburg, Georgia O'Keefe and Prince! We visit artists in our community and see art in public parks and murals throughout our downtown.
The art classroom moved into a multi-purpose room that has a sink and lots of room to spread out.
We built a mural wall and started painting whales and underwater scenes. Inspired by Keith Haring, we painted large figures, the earth, moon and stars with positive messages about who we are and what we dream about! My students have been deeply engaged as they make IMAGES to express themselves, since our verbal communication is limited.
A special dream for our school is coming true as my Painting 1 class has become a Concurrent Enrollment course that offers students college credit while they are in high school! I am gathering the materials we need to transform a multi-purpose room into a painting studio! I appreciate the generosity of our community to open their hearts, minds and wallets to our students to make it happen!
