Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come from different places, have different backgrounds, speak different languages, and have different needs and wants in a classroom. In my chemistry classroom, I strive for equity in all aspects of the classroom from assignments to seating to language. As a low-income, urban, high school--and in the building of the second oldest public high school in the United States--we often need additional material supports outside of what can be found within our walls presently.

What makes these students so amazing is their passion, their presence, and their consistency in looking for progress academically, socially, emotionally, as learners in an absolutely historic time to be a student.

This is my first year at my school, and I want to start off on a great note. I want my students to see, hear, and feel the positives from all of the work I have been trying to get prepared for these awesome learners. Technically, I am meant to teach chemistry. But, more than that, I am here to teach and learn alongside my students through this period of virtual and in-person learning as we strive for an engaging, actively anti-racist curriculum that is open, welcoming, and equitable.

My Project

As I enter into my second year of teaching, I am pushing to plan ahead and predict the needs of my students. While I had a few notebooks last year, due to mandates against the usage of paper in classrooms with COVID-19 I was unable to mandate written work. This year, however, I want to plan for my students to grow in their organizational skills, note-taking skills, and their understanding of chemistry.

Call me old-schooled, but I firmly believe that in writing--and drawing--my students will be better equipped with skills to properly learn and retain information from class.

The notebooks and pencils requested in this project will directly affect my students' abilities to participate in written activities. By ensuring the notebooks do not leave my classroom, students can rely on coming to chemistry class and being able to participate in the activities. And should students be participating in distanced learning, they will be able to paste any work in the notebook upon their eventual return to our classroom.

I have been blessed with donations from Donor's Choose in the past, and I would be so grateful and excited to have this project be fulfilled as well so that I might be able to provide this life skill to my students.
