My Students
My students in AP Literature are driven to achieve their goals of preparing for college. Many of them are from families in which no one has ever been to college, and several of them are from homes where English is not their primary language. Despite many obstacles, they work hard to succeed.
What makes my students special is their commitment to making a difference in their communities and their families as well as their perseverance in the face of challenges with poverty, isolation due to the coronavirus, and broken homes.
My students want to go to college in order to better their lives and their environment.
We are a highly culturally diverse, small-town, island community with a mix of Hawaiian, Filipino, Caucasian, Korean, Japanese, Pacific Islander, African American, and Hispanic students. Over half of our students are eligible for free or reduced lunch. Most of our students’ parents are working class, and many have to work two or more jobs. They are therefore not able to support their children with academics.
My Project
Perrine’s Literature 13th Edition includes everything students need to know to prepare for the AP Literature and Composition exam. It has a comprehensive anthology of both modern and classical literature along with detailed explanations of the elements of poetry and fiction and excellent descriptions of all the literary devices that students need to learn.
My students would feel more valued and motivated if they had these appropriate, high-quality textbooks.
Although we do have a few copies of Perrine’s Literature ninth edition textbooks from 2006, most of them are unfortunately falling apart. I have only five copies of the newer books in which the content is more applicable to the rigorous, college-level standards of the class and the exam.
More than half of students from low‑income households
