My students need fiction and non-fiction books about owls as well as owl pellets to motivate my students and connect them with the wonders of nature.

My Students
Our classroom is a place of challenge and discovery! While we live in the most impoverished county in California, our dreams and determination to achieve a brighter future are undimmed. Our little town is both friendly and remarkably beautiful; however, many families struggle financially. As a very small, rural, Title I school, all of our students participate in both the free lunch and free breakfast programs. The wonderful first to fifth grade students who visit my Reading Intervention classroom work diligently to sharpen their reading and writing skills. They eagerly strive to move forward in their academic careers.
My Project
How do you convince a reluctant reader to devour every book you can offer? It's easy when you connect reading with a natural science project! Students become so curious and involved that they direct their own learning by asking questions and researching to find answers.
Imagine children running off the playground to eagerly line up for Reading Intervention.
This Fall we will begin the year with a unit of study on wild animals. As we discuss the central question of "Should people be allowed to keep wild animals as pets?" students will read both fiction and non-fiction books on owls including "Owl Moon" by Jane Yolen and "National Geographic Readers: Owls." Next, students will then dissect owl pellets to allow for hands on discoveries about an owl's place in the food chain. Finally, the the students will split into research teams and create Google Slide presentations on their favorite species of owl just in time for Halloween. These presentations will be shared with members of their regular classroom during a special end of unit party. Won't you please consider supporting our project and allowing my students the joy of discovering the beauty and mystery of owls as they sharpen their reading skills?
