My Students

I strive to have an engaging classroom that keeps my students involved and excited to learn. I am at a great school with a variety of demographics of families, although the major is in low-income families. We are a Title I school and although we have resources, it just never seems to be enough. As the holidays are approaching, you hear and see the devastating reality some students live in. When I send home homework, maybe two or three students return their work. They explain they don't have pencils, glue, or scissors to be able to complete the assignment. They have to take care of their siblings, stay with a caretaker until late hours in the evening, or just are not encouraged to work on their academics. When coming to school, many look forward to the consistency, love, and care they get while learning each day. The students love to engage with each other, even if it's while learning. I look forward to getting back into the classroom with Covid somewhat behind us and getting back into a routine of learning hands-on!

My Project

Many students who have a "typical" home life are blessed with the average items and trends for their age. At our school, it is few and far between. Not only do I have my classroom of students, but I tutor twice a week with another twenty-five students and even started Saturdays with another ten. Unfortunately, for many of these students it just another place to be rather than home. Luckily, a place of comfort and love even with extended day of academics. The students at our school have a very poor demographic. Many come to school with holes in their shoes, clothes too short showing their bellies, some unbathed. Just last week a student came in late because their parent woke up late and said "Ms. Dries I missed breakfast here and we didn't have anything to eat at home". Some of the stories you hear are devesting. This Christmas, my goal is to give them gifts they'll remember. These fidget packs are what many students are carrying around right now, but most of the students I see in my classroom during the day and after school, aren't in that trend. Do they want to be? Of course! But their job is to go to school and they're not the ones who provide for themselves. When we go back in our text to find text evidence and highlight where they found the answer, they're embarrassed when they made a mistake. They'll hold their papers close to their chest or flip them upside down so others don't see their mistake. These erasable highlighters encourage the students to still try because it can easily be erased and correct. These items will give these students a reason to smile this season, please consider donating.
