Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are High School female students who are trying to make a difference in their community.
My students are trying to develop a program where they help younger aged female students receive support in learning to code and make it where it can become sustainable from year to year. Younger students learning to code will one day take over as the students teaching coding to future female students.
The students that would be receiving the support are 6th grade to 8th grade female students from the community as well as being open to other surrounding towns.
By giving back to the community students will develop leadership skills that will guide them and expand their abilities to work cohesively as a team under pressure. Students will be able to apply the skills they've learned through previous courses and then pass those techniques on to young inexperienced girl coders. Students will also advance their communicating and relationship building skills by adapting to a very diverse environment.
In Their Own Words
As a team our goal is to help students pursue their interests and expose them to opportunities in the STEM field, more specifically the Technological aspect of it. We are determined to find females in grades 6-8 and teach them the "language of the future" so that they may later pursue a career in Computer Science.
We will utilize this leadership opportunity to the fullest by being the mentors. As mentors, we have the responsibility of educating the children in the STEM field. Also, we will be giving the students experience that they could use to help them make informed decisions regarding their future occupation. Our communication skills will be enhanced because of the outreach.
The idea of creating this project actually came from our Capstone class where we had to make a project based on something we are trying to solve. As a small group of 5 girls with different backgrounds, we all realize one common problem- In our district and its surrounding towns females are not equally represented in computer science and the gender gap continues to grow. We want to give these girls an opportunity to have fun while learning skills that will last them a lifetime, and which will eventually encourage them to pursue their interests in STEM, helping close this gender gap. Throughout the time they are with us we will teach them things that as a group neither of us had the privilege of learning at their ages. One fun way we can do this is with the help of Sphero balls which are mini robots they program with just their phones!
