Girls Are Going to Read Good Books!

Well, I just got back from Barnes and Noble. It was a very interesting trip. I spent hours searching and previewing several new series that my girls would enjoy. While I was at Barnes and Noble searching for books that they would like, I was looking around at all the kids with their parents. Every one of them getting to pick out the books they wanted. I overheard one particular mom say, "Well, honey, you get to pick out a few more books, are you sure you want that one?" It must have hit me in a very strange way because I started to cry in Barnes and Noble (which was really embarrassing) and to make matters worse I couldn't stop. I had to sit down at a table to try to pull myself together...mind you the table was miniature in size because it is in the children's section...so I looked pretty ridiculous! But I was so overwhelmed with feelings of sadness and happiness that I couldn't hold back my tears. I had two thoughts running through my head: 1. My students would be so happy to go into a Barnes and Noble. If you told them that they were going to get to pick out one book that they would get to own..they would take hours....and it made me really sad because the reality is that most are not given that opportunity. 2. I felt happy because I know in my heart that I try so hard to give them equal opportunities. Sure, they may not get to go into a Barnes and Noble to pick out their own books, but when they are in my room "what's mine is theirs" and they can still experience the excitement of finding and reading new books. I have seen it firsthand! Anyhow, I know I just wrote a ton, but I felt it necessary to share my experience. I hope that you can see from my picture the effort I have put into my classroom. Everything there was purchased by me. When looking at the picture you may think I am a millionaire, but I am not--I just love my kids and believe in them 100%, as a result, I can never stop giving. I give what I can, however, I can't continue to afford everything on my own that is why I would like your help in purchasing these materials for them. I hope that you decide that we are worthy of your donation and help us get some new good books. The books I am asking for are all a part of a series. My rationale is this: I have noticed that many of the girls in my class love trading and talking about books that are in a series. I have been listening to them talk about what a certain character does in the first book compared to in the third (with no prompting from me), which is exactly what I want because that means they are making reading a real part of their lives! Thank you for taking the time to read my very long proposal, and again please help us get some new books to be excited about! Side note:I did the same for the boys. I actual have two separate proposals posted. I have many books in my classroom that appeal to both genders, but some books appeal more to boys while others appeal more to girls. I decided to put them up separately.
