Girls and the Maker Movement

My students need maker materials that are designed to hook girls into the Maker Movement. We are going to make LED light up shoes and hoodies and other projects that are girl-lead.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Resilient, positive, compassionate, and driven describe the scholars at my middle school. The obstacles the scholars have to overcome simply to make it to school would have many adults think of quitting AND yet they succeed and thrive. The middle school is located in one of the poorest and most under-served neighborhoods in a large rich city. They represent an array of abilities, beliefs, backgrounds, ethnicities and identities. All of their differences unite them together in a beautiful way. The school has formed a strong community in which no scholar falls through the crack and all have a chance at academic and social success.

My Project

This year I facilitated a Maker Club and it was fantastic. The students made robots, battled their robots, 3D printed robots and made a Minecraft server. At one point I looked around and wondered where were the girls! I thought, "Well, if I was a 12 year old girl, would I want to make and fight robots with all these boys?" Probably not, and I was even more on the tomboy side.

After some research and reflection, I decided to start a Girls Maker Class, in which girls would meet each day and make things they found interesting.

I asked them to think of fun projects, explore ideas on the Internet and look at my Make magazines. They were interested in learning how to make perfume (chemistry!), LED light up shoes (electronics and coding!) and 3d printing of jewelry (design and math!).

I am asking for a variety of materials, including development boards, batteries, and lots of items for designing products. The materials for this project will go directly into the hands of young women who want to make and be a part of the maker movement. They will design and make projects that are interesting to them in a safe and encouraging environment. Many of the girls are in the Newcomer Pathway (for recent immigrants) and this class will be their one class with native English speakers. This will be a great way for the girls to learn English and make new things!
