We need club materials like poster boards, paper for flyers, markers, paint, and paintbrushes to make posters and flyers to advertise our numerous fundraising events.
The Girl Up chapter was created by students who want to empower young girls in impoverished countries with the tools they need in order to succeed. Girl Up's mission is to harness the power of service-learning to empower both the girls advocating for and for the girls receiving aid.
A student started a chapter after she was selected as a Teen Advisory for United Nations Campaign, Girl Up. After attending Girl Up's Summit this past summer and learning about the issues faced by young women and what young people could do to help, she wanted to convey the passion and knowledge she had obtained to her school's community.
Soon a group of students formed the core of the club's leadership. The students are now working to help young adolescent girls in impoverished countries, through weekly discussions on topics affecting women such as the polarizing effect of global warming and cyber campaigns to pledge allegiance to girls worldwide.
Girl Up is a club based around the ideology that when young adolescent girls are empowered and equipped with the tools they need to succeed, they will succeed. This teaches the students about current world issues and also mobilizes them to do something about it. For example, the planned Girl Up fundraising initiatives will benefit girls living in Guatemala, India, Ethiopia, Malawi and Liberia, and potentially change their lives.
In a world where it seems like something bad is happening everyday, it is easy to be overwhelmed and belittle the value of your strength and power. This club empowers and encourages student activism and trains the next generation to solve world class problems through cooperative teamwork, lobbying and fundraising.
In Their Own Words
Our main focus this year is to raise $2,000 through various community fundraisers throughout the year, and focuses on issues that affect adolescent girls in different parts of the world. The money raised will go towards different need-based projects in Liberia, Guatemala, Malawi, India, and Ethiopia. Upcoming fundraising project ideas include movie nights and a Henna Week.
Girl Up is the first club of its kind at our school. It is very unique in the aspect that it encourages students to focus on bigger issues, issues not concerning themselves. Our primary focus is to advocate for the rights of young adolescent girls living in places where it's hardest to be a girl, so that these issues in our community are talked about and acknowledged, as well as taken action against. Through fundraising projects and weekly discussions, more people will become aware.
Our club will help to raise awareness and empower both the girls receiving and the girls providing aid. By instilling a sense of empathy in young people, this club encourages the next generation to take matters into their own hands and in doing so, breaks down indifference that may exist in the students. Our main focus this year is to help the young adolescent girls living in refugee camps get access to education. This includes initiatives such as fundraising for bikes and solar light panels.
