My Students
My elementary is a unique school, located in the heart of downtown Gilbert, AZ. We serve a lower-middle class community. It is a Title I school serving approximately 50% free and reduced price lunch population.
We strive to give our students the best learning environment.
We offer a variety of programs and services that allow our students to compete to the best of their abilities with not only their peers at our school but with students in surrounding schools in our district.
My Project
This year for Girls Who Code after school club, I want to give access to more girls. Recruiting girls to participate is difficult because the girls are intimidated by the thought of coding and the robotics. I want more girls to be able to participate and learn the value of Computer Science. The girls will be learning the fundamentals of computer Science and coding, while building learning and teamwork.
With more girls participating, we will have varying levels of ability.
For the younger and new girls, I want to use the SmartGurlz coding dolls to break the barrier to coding and make the tasks less intimidating. The Ozobots will be for the intermediate ability levels. The girls will be able to be artistic and design varying courses for the Ozobots. The Robotic arm is for the girls who have been in the coding club for several years and are more advanced with their abilities. Although this will be a challenge for them, I know they are capable of exceeding expectations. All the girls will attempt to explore the idea of using Alexa to send commands to the Ozobots or the Robotic arm.
I want to teach the girls how to make a difference with technology, even with having varying levels of abilities. With more resources in the club, the more girls who can participate and the more learning that can happen. It is the hope that the girls will connect to to the STEAM activities and will continue pursuing until they have successful careers. I want to reiterate to the girls that Computer Science can be fun and not intimidating.
