I teach a 2nd/3rd grade special day classroom in the Bay Area. My students are a fun bunch of diverse kids who love school and enjoy learning. They come to me with various skill levels and disabilities that can inhibit their learning, but together we find ways to celebrate and share their differences within our school community.
My students are silly and kind to one another.
They love to explore the world around them. My students learn in different ways, and my classroom gives them a place to do so. We create, dance and laugh our way through our school days, allowing each student to feel successful.
My Project
Girls and women are incredible individuals who can excel at anything they put their mind to. My students need to see women achieving and succeeding in different fields. Our classroom library needs to have books that celebrate women and their achievements, reflect the diversity of our class and community and empower my students to be the best they can be.
Students need to find ways to connect to literature, and they can only do so when the books in their classroom reflect who they are.
My students to feel empowered to do whatever they want in life, no matter how big their dreams might seem. Being able to read and learn about these pioneering women in the STEM field will help them reach their dreams.
Reading about Jane Goodall and Eugenie Clark will allow my animal lovers an opportunity to see where their interests can take them. Reading about Katherine Johnson and Raye Montague will help my students who struggle in math learn that while math can be difficult, using it can change the world. Reading about Temple Grandin will allow my students to see that their disabilities do not define who they are. I know this group of books will become a treasured part of our classroom library, and students will be able to learn from them for years to come.
