Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have 32 energetic fourth graders in my New York City classroom. Many of the children come from low-economic households, but they have big dreams. They understand the importance of a good education. Most of the students attend after-school programs as well, so they spend the majority of their day in school.

My students work both in homogeneous groups and in heterogeneous groups in order to accomplish their daily learning targets.

We not only focus our academic goals, but on our social-emotional goals as well. We are involved with the Leader in Me program and practice our 7 Habits of Happy Kids. We understand that in order to be successful in school, we must always try our best. We motivate each other and work as a team.

My Project

We are starting a Girls Empowerment Movement club that incorporates Girl Power and Coding for Girls. We are requesting a few children's books on coding specifically geared to girls so our girls could learn some of the basic steps and lingo. We are also requesting an app controlled robot ball, a bit coding robot and app control STEM toys. We want the girls to experience hands on training with coding. It will spark an interest in computer science and engage the girls in discussions that require them to practice their critical thinking skills.

We want the girls to develop a strong sense of sisterhood as they work together on coding projects to achieve their goals.

Our girls are excited to team up with their big sisters who will guide them through the process of learning how to code. Then next year, they will become big sisters and teach the younger girls at our school how to code. We want the girls to feel empowered, support each other, and have fun learning. GIRL POWER!
