This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I hope every one of my students realizes they are readers and writers. I want them to develop those interrelated identities. Already they have drawn reader identity posters, showing the class their preferences and reasons for reading. Now we are exploring writing, their immense voices!

While I work with 90 students - all of whom will be welcome to use the magnetic poetry - this project is intended for my fourteen English Language Learners (ELL).

Students who are ELLs need adaptations. I can't teach sentence structure, for example, by having them write sentences or paragraphs, not at first anyway. They need to move around and see how parts of speech - nouns, adjectives, and verbs - interact with each other. These students are some of the hardest-working students I have ever seen. They speak Spanish, Vietnamese, and Dari. They love movies and "American football." They want to improve their English so they can become a doctor, car mechanic, and lawyer.

My Project

If the title didn't give it away, I'm making gigantic magnetic poetry. (The paint will go on the wall, becoming the frig; the strips will go on lamented words - I have the laminator). Students will have a 6 X 4 foot wall to write poems, leave fun messages, and - this makes the grammarian in me so happy - practice sentence structure in a formalized lesson. Diagramming sentences was never a treat for me. But having large manipulatives and giving students some say in the words we work with will make learning that much enjoyable.

First off, if this project gets funded, I'll tell my ELL students that "someone out there" cares.

Second, my students have been taught that learning is drills and memorization. They have not had as much fun as they should. This is one small way for them to practice English that will get them smiling and laughing. So thanks!
