From diverse populations and cultures, my gifted students are homeless to affluent, ELL to twice exceptional, perfectionists to underachievers, and asynchronous to highly profound gifted. They vary greatly in their interests, learning styles, and readiness levels. No matter their differences, they share one common thread: ALL of my gifted students LOVE learning!
Gifted children need a differentiated curriculum and social emotional support that includes enrichment/extensions, in-depth explorations, creative thinking opportunities, and STEAM activities (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math).
They are sponges...thirsty for challenges, ready to GROW and S-T-R-E-T-C-H their brains!
Our gifted students may be able to coast through academics because they are so bright. However, in real life there will be times when they struggle. It is so important that they learn the skills of perseverance, patience, and persistence through a difficult task. With the planks and the straws, they will be given a building task and will then need to re-create it. It may take several attempts but when they finally reach their intended outcome, there is a real sense of accomplishment - the grit paid off.
I hope to develop leaders.
With Team Challenges and STEM challenges, I expect my students to develop effective leadership skills. When a group is working to goal, a leader is crucial to the success. I hope to teach my students that leaders encourage the best from each team member, to organize the strengths of the group, and keep the tone positive. Growth Mindset for the Gifted will benefit the school by allowing students to develop their leadership, problems solving, and critical thinking skills. It is fostering social emotional needs with a premise of a growth mindset, where failures and mistakes are encouraged.
The resources for the project are challenging, engaging, and rigorous; they will stimulate and S-T-R-E-T-C-H the brain muscles of our students. The project encourages self-evaluation and autonomous leaders. It integrates character education with leadership, perseverance, and sportsmanship with independent and collaborative activities. It supports our mission statement by “inspiring good character and a passion for life-long learning.”
