My Students

Can you imagine growing up without books? Many of my kindergartners come from low-income homes and don’t have books at home. They love borrowing books from our classroom library. Books with familiar characters engage and support growing readers.

My students are creative, playful and excited about learning to read.

Our school is located in a very diverse neighborhood in Brooklyn. There are many languages spoken in my classroom. Some children are learning English for the very first time.

Regardless of the challenges my students face, they come to school every day ready to learn and explore.

My Project

Kindergarten students are excited about learning to read. I feel privileged to guide them through the magical world of books. I love teaching reading and know the importance of having enough books, which support and challenge emergent readers. Many of my students do not have books at home and often ask to borrow books from our class library. Kindergarteners love Piggie and Elephant books by Mo Willems. They know the characters so well that they can pretend to read these books by “reading” the illustrations. These kinds of pre-reading experiences give my kindergartners confidence and a vital foundation for literacy development. Unfortunately, we only have five Piggy and Elephant books in our classroom of 25 students. I really don’t want to see little kids wait for their turn to read a book. I would like to have enough Piggie and Elephant books so every child can borrow at least one book. By supporting our classroom, you’ll be giving so many children a wonderful gift of reading.
